Airports are major employment centers for the cities they serve and depend upon a wide variety of individuals with distinct skill sets. Consider careers available in the air travel industry. Medium to large aviation hubs offer plenty of job opportunities to choose from. Take the time to consider jobs and career paths that appeal to your personal and professional interests.
This fact sheet is a valuable resource for high school students and young professionals seeking to learn more about the industry, helping them narrow down specific career pathways to explore as they make educational and career decisions. It highlights John Glenn International Airport (CMH) and Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) growth, their post-COVID-19 recoveries, and their prospective employment opportunities. Both airports host community events and are involved in hosting career exploration tours for youth field trips. CMH utilizes airport ambassadors (flycolumbus.com/business/volunteer) as additional resources for networking and as career-exploration contacts. The air travel industry is dynamic and poised for growth, and will continue to offer a wide variety of career paths.
John Glenn and Rickenbacker Airports
John Glenn International Airport (CMH) is located six miles east of downtown Columbus, Ohio. It stands as a significant economic driver for central Ohio and is the second-busiest airport in the state. In 2024, CMH served an all-time high of over 9 million passengers, marking a 6.7% increase from the previous year. This surge in passenger traffic is due, in part, to offering more flight options which now include nonstop service to Seattle, San Diego, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Portland (Maine), Los Angeles, and Kansas City (Columbus Regional Airport Authority, 2024). This growth in direct flights (over 53 nonstop destinations) not only caters to the increasing local demand for air travel but also strengthens the region's workforce (Bender, 2025; Columbus Regional Airport Authority, 2023). With the new air services, ongoing construction progress, and additional expansion projects on the horizon, local demand for air travel is expected to grow, and its workforce is expected to advance.
Key Highlights and Developments at John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (2024–2025)
To accommodate this growth and further enhance the travel experience, CMH has undertaken several key initiatives and developments, impacting passengers and the local workforce.
Enhanced Passenger Experience
- Mobile IDs at Transportation Security Administration (TSA): CMH implemented mobile ID technology at TSA checkpoints to expedite the security process.
- BrewDog opens first airport location: BrewDog's concourse B location at CMH creates new jobs in the hospitality sector and provides travelers with a taste of local Columbus flavor.
Community Engagement and Events
- U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds air show: CMH hosted the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, drawing thousands of visitors and earning Columbus the honor of "Civilian Show Site of the Year." The Columbus Air Show will return in 2025.
- Tuskegee Airmen mural at Rickenbacker Airport: Rickenbacker unveiled a mural by local artist Adam Hernandez, celebrating the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen who broke barriers in aviation and civil rights.
- Runway 5K: This annual event raised over $80,000 for Honor Flight Columbus, supporting veterans' trips to Washington, D.C.
Infrastructure Development
- CMH Next project and taxiway C relocation: A significant milestone was achieved in the CMH Next project, relocating taxiway C to prepare for the new terminal construction.
- New terminal benefits enhance both the employee and customer experience:
- elevates the customer travel experience
- improves employee access to airport operations, retail, and service industry positions
- reflects the vibrancy of Columbus and the community
- generates hundreds of construction jobs during the building phase
(Columbus Regional Airport Authority, 2025)
Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) is a key economic driver for central Ohio and plays a crucial role in global trade and logistics as a civil-military public airport focused on moving cargo and people. The airport primarily ships freight but also serves over 310,000 passengers annually. LCK has seen increased cargo activity since COVID-19 due to rerouting via air to alleviate container pileups in backlogged seaports (Clay, 2020). In 2021, LCK was named Airport of the Year by the Ohio Aviation Association, and in 2024 started a $12 million runway rehabilitation project to allow one of the runways to handle heavier aircraft
Additionally, the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) mobility center will open in late 2025. The center is designed to serve as a major connection point and meet the needs of Rickenbacker area employers, employees, and residents (Dorsey, 2023). Beyond transportation, the new mobility center will serve as a vital community resource for the 38,000 workers and 900 employers in the Rickenbacker area. By providing shared gathering spaces, workforce development programs, on-site childcare, and a food pantry, the center will offer holistic support, addressing both transportation challenges and essential needs within the community (Metro Magazine, 2023).

How Do I Get a Job at an Airport?
So, you are considering working at an airport. Many different job types are available in addition to the expected pilot and flight attendant roles that initially come to mind. Hundreds of behind-the-scenes critical roles offer great career potential in the aviation industry. To increase your chances of landing a future job, consider doing some initial research.
- Research airport careers: Identify a few positions that match your interests. Table 1 lists job titles that may help jump-start your research. The jobs are far-ranging, including traffic controllers, marketing specialists, baggage handlers, mechanics, commercial pilots, customs officers, airport management, flight attendants, security personnel, retail and hospitality staff, and more.
- Identify your matches: Find positions that align with your interests, skills, and potential qualifications. Check the requirements for each role, including their required education level, work experience, and certifications. This will be useful in making future educational and training decisions.
- Job search: Utilize various online resources to find airport job openings.
- Airport websites (e.g., Columbus Regional Airport Authority, or Aviation Job Search)
- Online job boards (e.g., Google, Monster, and Indeed)
- Company websites (e.g., airlines, retail stores, and restaurants)
- Local newspapers and job listings (e.g., The Columbus Dispatch)
- Network and make contact: Introduce yourself and express interest in potential job opportunities. Make meaningful connections, and reach out to employers:
- airport HR departments
- companies operating within airports (airlines, retail stores, restaurants, and hotels)
- professional associations (e.g., Airports Council International)
- job fairs, school tours, airport events, and industry events
- Security checks: Most airport jobs require background-screening checks. Understand the types of checks involved and ensure you meet the requirements.
- Develop a working resume: Start customizing your resume and cover letters to highlight relevant skills and the experience you have now, and determine what education, skill set, and qualifications are missing that you may want to obtain.
- Prepare for interviews: As you work towards building your work experience portfolio, always research the company and position, and then practice your responses to potential interview questions. Develop your list of questions and demonstrate your knowledge of airport operations and the associated skills for the targeted position.
A high school diploma or equivalent is a minimum educational requirement for ticket agents and other equivalent entry-level positions, although a two-year college degree is usually preferred. Basic computer skills and customer service experience are often expected qualifications. Travel and tourism programs, especially those with a focus on airline operations or customer service, can provide an advantage in the hiring process for certain airport jobs. When considering majors, consider communications, a second language, public relations, or hospitality and tourism.
The airport industry requires a diverse range of specialists beyond typical airline roles due to the logistical management of animals, people, and land uses. Various projects often require a contracted workforce of professionals such as wetland migration specialists, wildlife biologists, landscape/fencing specialists, landscape maintenance specialists, construction management, farming contract specialists, human logistics specialists (who manage passenger flow and staffing requirements), technologists, software/programming specialists, renewable energy specialists, geofencing and/or app specialists, or sustainability coordinators.
Popular Types of Airport Jobs
