General Management

Other Management Practices

Only 33% of the producers reported having used recombinant bovine somatotropin hormone (BST) in the two years prior to completing the questionnaire. Of those using BST, 29% had sponding 111 lb (51 kg) loss in RHA milk production. For each one percent estimated increase in % Days in Milk, there was a 157 lb (71 kg) corresponding increase in RHA milk production. In herds that had used BST during the past two years, RHA milk production was 635 lb (289 kg) higher than those herds that had not used BST (P=0.012). Mean milk production for dairies where male producers answered the questionnaire was 8,929 kg compared to 7,721 kg for those that were answered by their female counterparts (P < 0.01). The dairies where females answered the questionnaire also tended to have fewer number of cows in milk than those where males answered the questionnaire (P < 0.01).
