InstallationThis is not intended to be a guide for browser installation. If you don't have a browser installed, you will need to get the software. Browsers are generally available through FTP (file transfer protocol) for Internet users. Installation is straightforward, although there may be a few quirks. If you aren't comfortable with this process, find someone to help. Ohioline will require a few small changes for best operation. PC - WindowsIn Windows you must set the "Properties" up for your web browser to make a local connection. Your "working directory" should be set to your D: drive, or whatever your CD-ROM drive is called. This is done so that your application knows where to look for new files. If you don't want to mess up an existing installation, copy the browser icon into the same group and give it a different name (such as Ohioline) and modify the properties of the clone. To open local files on our CD-ROM product, go under the "File" menu to "Open File." This brings up the window for selecting files to be opened. Locate your CD-ROM drive and click on the file entitled "index.htm." Another way to open local files using your browser software is to "associate" all files with the extension ".htm(l)" with your browser. You can set any HTML document to be your default home page by setting it up under "Options." Go to "Options," release the mouse button on "Preferences," and locate "Window and Link Styles" in the next window. To set your home page to be the root index on our CD-ROM, click the radio button on "Home Page Location," and type in the field "file://index.htm." MacintoshDownloading Netscape Netscape (Mac) can be found at many Macintosh FTP sites. Try going to the Netscape homepage (http://home/netscape.com/) to find the latest version. Netscape for the Macintosh is compressed using HQX (binhex). You will need to decompress this file with an application such as Stuffit Lite or Stuffit Expander (ftp.netcom.com/pub/le/leonardr/Aladdin/ or http://www.aladdinsys.com/). Installing Netscape The "netscape-x.hqx" icon can be opened using Stuffit Lite or Stuffit Expander. This will expand into an installer program (Netscape Installer). If you have a Power PC, be sure to "drag" the "custom install" window open and "check" the radio button that installs the PPC software. Netscape will install directly onto your hard drive. Running Netscape To open Netscape "double-click" on the Netscape icon. If you are not connected to the Internet with either a direct connection, or a SLIP/PPP connection, you will get an error message. If you click that error message closed, you will see a gray window. You are now ready to browse the Ohioline CD-ROM. Under the "File" menu, go to "Open File." Locate the Ohioline CD-ROM and "double-click" it open. There is a file at this directory level titled "INDEX.HTM," "double-click" on this file. Next you will see your Netscape screen fill up with the images from our homepage. Most of the buttons, and all of the highlighted words are clickable. Helper Applications You will find some files on the CD-ROM that don't end in .HTM. Instead they end in .PDF, or .MOV. If you click on these links you will be prompted by Netscape to configure a viewer, delete, or save the file. Select "Configure a Viewer." For .MOV files, or QuickTime movie files, your "MoviePlayer" application which came with your operating system should work file. For files that end in .PDF you must find a copy of Adobe Acrobat Viewer 2.0 or greater. There are links to Adobe's web site on the Ohioline CD-ROM. You can also get Acrobat by buying other Adobe products, and it is bundled with the latest version of the Mac OS (system 8.6).
