The phrases contained in the mission statement represent the collective work of scores of faculty, staff, students, and external partners of the College. Underpinning these concise statements are the provocative thoughts and emotions of those who participated in their creation. To merely present the words does not begin to portray the vibrance and enthusiasm with which they were written. It is hoped that the following companion piece will begin to bring the statement alive for you and induce excitement for the possibilities which are ours.

OUR MISSION

We have set our future goals and have defined the characteristics of our new culture. Our mission further proclaims our distinctive competencies, firmly declares what we stand for, and helps to set our course of direction for the future.

We discover and distribute knowledge which is used to wisely manage and add value to natural and biological resources.

Our mission as a land-grant institution is two-fold: (1) to make discoveries which advance knowledge that makes a difference, and (2) to communicate the impact and application of those discoveries to all who might benefit from them. Our mission as a college is to provide these services within the context of food, agriculture, and the environment, with a dedication to the sustainability of the earth's resources.

We strive to balance science and social concerns as well as rural and urban interests.

Our history is rich with examples of research that examined the hard questions of the day to answer the daily needs of the citizen. In the thread of our existence, the weave of Ohio's population has evolved from a rural rug to a quilt of country, suburb, and city. Divided by land use, all are still dependent on native resources which generate sustenance, shelter, work, and recreation. Our continuing challenge shall be to provide a diverse people with information that is economically and environmentally sound as well as socially acceptable to help them improve their lives.

We identify priority issues at the local, national, and international levels through free and open discussion among ourselves and our partners.

The ever-expanding arena of opportunities for discovery and learning places a premium on our resources. The choices of who we will serve and how we will serve them will be carefully made with the ongoing counsel and guidance of our peers and stakeholders, both within and outside the boundaries of higher education.

We reward the integration of vibrant teaching, forward-thinking research, creative problem solving, and nourishment of the human spirit.

Within the ecological paradigm we have set for ourselves, we move beyond the traditional arenas of teaching, research, and extension to provide incentives to integrate the best of what we have to offer.
