Stem Cankers

Diaporthe Stem Canker — Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora.

The fungus causing Diaporthe stem canker also infects seed, causing seed decay, and survives on old soybean residue. Currently this disease is rarely yield limiting but can be found on single diseased plants scattered throughout a field. The key symptom is a slightly sunken, reddish-brown or tan canker near a node on the stem. Older lesions will turn dark brown or black in color. The stem tissue below the canker will remain green.

Figure 20 Figure 20. Diaporthe stem canker caused by the fungus Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora. This is a fungus that develops in the stem and will eventually girdle the stem and kill the plant.
