Biosolids Application to Agriculture
Utilizing Biosolids Analysis to Meet Crop Nutrient Needs

Bulletin 879-99

Sample Calculation for Biosolid Applications

The following example (Table 1) is from an actual biosolid analysis. The calculations are intended to help those who are involved in the prescription of crop nutrients. Biosolid nutrients can be well utilized in the major grain crops, i.e., corn, grass hay, and wheat. Special considerations must be taken when sludge is applied to forage crops or plants eaten by humans or animals. Waste generating facilities must follow the guidelines set by the OEPA to apply biosolids to crop land. Forages should be monitored for nutrient changes, and soil pH should be maintained at a level of optimum plant response, approximately 6.5.

The following steps utilize an actual sludge analysis and soil test to determine the amounts of nutrients and heavy metals being applied to crop ground.
