ZELKOVA SERRATA Japanese Zelkova

Shaker Blvd., Shaker Heights (Cleveland Area)

Planted: Date Unknown

Site: 24' Tree Lawn

1971 Comments: The trees are of typical upright spreading habit and appear to be an excellent choice for this wide tree lawn. They are consistent in size and form. There has been evidence of dieback and canker problems.

Height 19.0' 21.4' 23.2' 23.2' 45.0'
Caliper 5.9" 6.5" 6.6" 6.8" 23.5"
Spread 15.8' 17.0' 21.0' 21.0' 46.3'

1997 Comments: The planting lawn is 24 feet wide. Originally there were seventy-nine plants that ran quite a distance. Only three trees remain. There is no clue to the exact original address. There is little disruption of the sidewalk and no overhead wires, so this is a site where the trees can grow large. The likely reasons for the low survival rate are the cold winters of 1978, 1979, 1983, 1984, and again in 1993.

Four percent of the overall planting survived (3 of 79 trees). The 1997 data in the table are based on three trees.
