SYRINGA AMURENSIS JAPONICA Japanese Tree Lilac

Parkside Drive, Brooklyn (Cleveland Area)

Planted: 1955

Site: 7' Tree Lawn

1971 Comments: This tree may be grown as a shrub because it seldom attains a large size. Because of this, it may be too small for many large street tree locations. It is definitely too small in this particular site where the houses have a deep setback. The foliage is excellent and dark green through the summer months. The attractive white flower clusters that appear in June add to the beauty of the plant.

1997 Comments: No original address was given. The trees are unattractive because they are so slow growing that the seed heads are conspicuous for a number of years. The net result is that young trees have a dead haze of old fruit over the entire canopy. They have certainly remained within the bounds of the site. Little or no sidewalk damage was present.

Seventy percent of the overall planting survived (14 of 20 trees). The 1997 data in the table are based on four trees.
