Street Tree Evaluation Project

Bulletin 877-99

EUCOMMIA ULMOIDESHardy Rubbertree

Liberty at Syracuse, Cincinnati

Planted: 1960

Site: 5' Square in Sidewalk

1971 Comments: The trees are uniform and upright spreading which is typical of this species. They are growing in a very difficult environment. They are set in sidewalk planting pits where they are protected with wire screen since much damage has resulted, probably due to the closeness of the street and narrow sidewalk. In spite of the heavy air pollution and the unfavorable site, the plants are growing well. This indicates this is probably a good selection for the difficult situation which exists in this area.

1997 Comments: Interesting situation here. These plants were originally in a 5' x 5' sidewalk. Three of the initial plants were moved to Eden Park about twelve years after they were planted. About 6% of the original plantings survived, but they have survived in a new environment which is more of a woodland edge without any sidewalk near the tree. So the environment has changed dramatically. This is one of two locations where this tree was planted; the other was a tree lawn planting. In the Shade Tree Evaluation Plot, this plant proved to be intolerant of compaction and excessive cold. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the trees had remained in the sidewalk cut.

Sixty percent of the overall planting survived (3 of 5 trees). The 1997 data in the table are based on three trees.
