BETULA PENDULA 'GRACILIS' Cutleafed European White Birch

2217 E. 290th, Wickliffe (Cleveland Area)

Planted: 1957

Site: 10' Tree Lawn

1971 Comments: The trees are large for this tree lawn. The pendulous habit poses some traffic interference problems. These trees are afflicted by the bronze birch borer, a serious problem with this particular species. Cutleafed European White Birch are not recommended for planting in many landscapes because of this problem and because of its subsequent top die-back. These problems cause high maintenance costs.

1997 Comments: None of these plants survived. This is typical for the short-lived European White Birch. The scientific name was changed after the 1971 publication when the plant was identified as Betula Verrucosa Laciniata. Replacements in this area were European Littleleaf Lindens. Sidewalks generally are in good condition.

Zero percent of the original planting survived (0 of 53 trees).
