Betula populifoliaGray BirchGoodAn acid-soil-requiring tree. Will tolerate sterile soils. Outside of its natural range, this plant is susceptible to bronze birch borer, which is often fatal. Urban or construction stresses will aggravate the insect problem.
Carpinus carolinianaHornbeamFairThis plant's service life in its natural range is short due to the presence of hornbeam borer. Increased stress and high light will result in more frequent and more severe hornbeam borer attacks. This plant can persist as a forest understory plant if minimum disturbance has been experienced. Excellent follow-up care is required for this plant to persist following construction activity. Once the plant is reestablished, it is stable.
