Safety Guidelines
Safety is crucial when working with chemicals, especially pesticides. Minimize
oral, dermal or inhalation exposure to chemicals, and always observe the following
safety tips.
Review the sprayer operators manual and chemical labels for recommended
procedures regarding safe use of equipment and chemicals.
- Wear protective clothing when calibrating, spraying and cleaning equipment
(Fig. 23). Goggles, rubber gloves and respirators or masks are standard equipment
when handling pesticides.
- To avoid overflowing and spilling chemicals on the ground, never leave sprayer
tanks unattended when filling.
- Pick up spilled materials promptly.
- Avoid contaminating drinking or other water supplies with direct dumping,
runoff, drift or rinse water used to clean spraying equipment.
- Promptly dispose of bags and other containers.
- Never place nozzles in your mouth to blow through the orifice.
- Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking
or smoking.
- Take a shower when pesticide handling or application is completed for the
day.
- Store pesticides in properly labeled containers, and keep them locked up.
