Steps for Effective Use of Foliar Fungicides to Control Diseases on Wheat
Several different fungicides are available for use on wheat. Obtain a current list of available fungicides and a rating of efficacy on the Ohio Field Crop Disease web site at www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/ohiofieldcropdisease. Review fungicide labels for application instructions, rates of application, and application restrictions. Choose the fungicide based on its efficacy against the diseases that occur in the field.
Some fungicides give broader spectrum control than others, and these should be used if applications prior to the boot stage are made. Most fungicides can be applied by ground equipment or by air. Follow label recommendations for the proper amount of water to use, but in most cases use 20 gallons of water per acre with ground equipment and 5 gallons of water per acre if applying by airplane. Using less water will lower effectiveness and lead to lower yield response.
