Maintaining Protective Devices

Gas masks and respirators are dependent on the cartridges and canisters for their effectiveness. It is necessary to clean and replace these units when their effectiveness is exhausted. Keep a record of the amount of use made of these units so that you may change filters and cartridges before they become ineffective. When respirators are used, the following practices are necessary:

  1. Change filters twice a day or more often if breathing becomes difficult.

  2. Change cartridges after 8 hours of actual use or more often if any odor of pesticides is detected.

  3. Remove the filters and cartridges and wash the face piece with soap and water after use. Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean cloth.

  4. Store the respirator, filters and cartridges in a clean, dry place - preferably in a tightly closed paper or plastic bag.

  5. Study and follow manufacturer's instructions for most effective operation.

  6. Check the pesticide label for information specific for that product.
