When a pesticide spill occurs, take immediate action. Keep unprotected people away from the spilled chemicals. Rope off the area and do not leave unless there is someone there to help confine the spill and warn of any danger. If the pesticide was spilled on anyone, wash it off immediately.
Confine the spill. If it is spreading, dike it up with sand, soil, sawdust, or an absorbent clay to soak up the spill. Shovel up contaminated material into a leak-proof container for proper disposal. Do not hose down the are as this spreads the chemical.
If you are involved with a major spill, you may need help. Keep people away, give first aid if needed and confine the spill. Then call the local fire department, state pesticide authorities (Ohio EPA 1-800-282-9378, Ohio Dept. Agriculture 614-866-6361) and then Chemtrec (Chemical Transportation Emergency Center) for help with emergencies involving spills, leaks, fires or explosions 1-800-424-9300. Additional emergency numbers now appear on pesticide labels.

It is advisable to discuss the use of pesticides with your family physician. Then, in case of an accident, he can be prepared with the latest information and the antidote. Atropine is the emergency antidote for phosphate poisoning. Consult with your physician about obtaining an adequate supply of 1/100 grain atropine tablets for emergency use. Give him the "note to physicians" found on the pesticide label. In case of an emergency, contact a physician immediately or take the patient directly to the emergency room of a hospital. Take the pesticide label or container with you.
Be sure your physician is aware of the Poison Control Centers listed below. The latest information regarding pesticide poisoning and treatment is available from these centers. In an emergency, you might consult the center; but, it is preferable to have your physician talk for you. Additional information about the pesticide may be obtained from the medical department of the pesticide manufacturer and from the Cooperative Extension Service.
