It is the aim of the authors to encourage familiarity and increase the general knowledge of the public to trees native to state of Ohio. In addition to native trees, a few exotic trees that are thoroughly established in the state are included in this book.
While this key is to be used primarily as a foliage key, many twig and bud characteristics are given to enable the book's use during the dormant period. In preparing this key, Rehder's Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs, 1940, was used freely. The personal experience of the authors in teaching plant identification, or dendrology, identified other characteristics used in naming plants. With few exceptions, the nomenclature follows Hortus Third, 1976.
The structural features of branches, twigs, buds, and leaves are shown in this key.
