Ohio State University Extension Bulletin

Ohio Trees

Bulletin 700-00

Acknowledgments

Dr. L. C. Chadwick and Professor F. W. Dean were authors of earlier editions of this book, and their significant contributions are acknowledged, including Dr. Chadwick's original keys to plant identification. Both Chadwick and Dean are deceased and have not been involved with the project for more than 20 years, thus their names were omitted as authors. Faculty currently involved with this project have been continued as authors.

Mrs. Mary Murnieks, School of Natural Resources, typed the entire manuscript as the text was not in electronic format.

Acknowledgment is made to the United States Department of Agriculture and the United States Forest Service in cooperation with various states in preparing and publishing similar tree guides for use with portions of the text. These states include Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, and Oklahoma. Acknowledgment is also made to the American Tree Association, Washington, D. C., for valuable material from its book, Common Trees of Ohio, by Joseph S. Illick.

Additional acknowledgment is given to The Ohio State University's School of Natural Resources and Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, who loaned cuts and photographs for the manual. These cuts were made from the original drawings by Mrs. A. E. Hoyle of the United States Forest Service. Professor J. S. Illick of the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University, N.Y., kindly loaned a number of zinc etchings. Other artistic renditions were made by John Nagy, Elaine Shay, and Alison Reader. A complete listing of renditions by each artist can be found under their names in the index of this book.

The classification and terminology were adapted from a Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs, by Alfred Rehder. This text was also used as a general reference in describing many species and varieties. Nomenclature is according to the International Code of Nomenclature, 1958, with few exceptions.

Distribution references of species in the state were taken from personal observations and from The Woody Plants of Ohio, by E. Lucy Braun, 1961 edition. Dr. Braun's book is one of several contributions to a continuing project to develop The Vascular Flora of Ohio.
