6. International Opportunities

Host Family*****

Welcome an international visitor into your home. Youth and adults come from more than 20 countries and stay with host families for three weeks to one year. 2000 exchangees will come from Japan (approximate dates July 25-August 18), and other countries around the world (September 26-December 7). Deadlines vary, February 28 to May 15.

  • For: interested Ohio Families.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office.
International Study Tours****

Travel to different countries for three weeks to study the local cultures and participate in short-term stays with host families. (Note: Not offered every year.)

  • For: 4-H members age 14 to 19.
  • When: July 1-15, 2000 (tentative).
  • Where: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia.
  • Cost: Approximately $2,800 per person.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office.
  • Application deadline: February 28
IFYE Ambassador*****

Visit a foreign country for seven weeks, living with two host families.

  • For: Youth ages 14 to 19.
  • When: June 24-August 6, 2000
  • Where: Various countries around the world
  • Cost: $2,850 to $3,350, plus domestic airfare
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office.
  • Application deadline: January 31, or soon after

 

IFYE Representative*****

Visit a foreign country for six months; live with various host families for three weeks each and travel independently for three weeks.

  • More than 20 countries can be visited including Luxembourg, Portugal, Japan, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Botswana, Norway and others.
  • For 4-H alumni 19 to 30.
  • When: June through December, 2001.
  • Cost: $3,800. Partial scholarships available through the Ohio 4-H Foundation and private donors.
  • Representatives selected are selected in November.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office, and are due in the State 4-H Office by October 31, 2000.
  • Selections will be held in November 2000.
4-H Japanese Exchange*****

Delegates travel to Japan to live with a Japanese family for one month. They take part in LABO camps and are involved in a variety of activities with their host families. Optional language training is available. This program operates on "odd years" only, and will next travel in 2001.

  • For current and former 4-H members 12 to 19.
  • When: July 12 to August 10, 2000.
  • Cost: Approximately $2,900 per person.
  • Applications are available from your county Extension office.
  • Application deadline: February 28
Promote International Understanding*****
  • Invite an Ohio IFYE (International 4-H Youth Exchange) Representative to share what he or she learned while living in another country.
  • Volunteer as an adult coordinator of international activities (ICC) in your county.
