6. International Opportunities

Host Family*****

Welcome an international visitor into your home. Youth and adults come from more than 30 countries and stay with host families for three weeks to one year. 1999 exchangees will come from Japan (approximate dates July 28-August 21), and other countries around the world.

  • For: interested Ohio Families.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office.
International Study Tours*****
Travel to different countries for three weeks to study the local cultures and participate in short-term stays with host families. (Note: Not offered every year.)
  • For: 4-H members age 14 to 19.
  • When: Three weeks in June and July.
  • Where: Many international destinations.
  • Cost: Approximately $2,500 per person.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office.
IFYE Representative*****
Visit a foreign country for six months; live with various host families for three weeks each and travel independently for three weeks.
  • More than 30 countries can be visited including Luxembourg, Portugal, Japan, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and others.
  • For 4-H alumni 19 to 30.
  • When: June through December.
  • Cost: $3,650. Full and half scholarships available through the Ohio 4-H Foundation.
  • Representatives selected are selected in November.
  • Applications available from your county OSU Extension Office, and are due in the State 4-H Office by October 15.
  • Selections will be held November 16, 1997.
4-H Japanese Exchange*****
Delegates travel to Japan to live with a Japanese family for one month. They take part in LABO camps and are involved in a variety of activities with their host families. Optional language training is available. This program operates on "odd years" only.
  • For current and former 4-H members 12 to 19.
  • When: July 12 to August 10, 1999.
  • Cost: Approximately $2,600 per person.
  • Applications are available from your county Extension office.
Promote International Understanding*****
  • Invite an Ohio IFYE (International 4-H Youth Exchange) Representative to share what he or she learned while living in another country.
  • Volunteer as an adult coordinator of international activities (ICC) in your county.
* Ohio 4-H Achievement Record to be completed and submitted to county OSU Extension office before January 31.
** Ohio 4-H Scholarship Application Sheet along with Ohio Achievement Record, to be completed and submitted to county OSU Extension office before January 31.
*** State 4-H Ambassador Application Form to be completed and submitted to county Extension office before January 31.
**** John T. Mount Scholarship Application Form to be completed and submitted to State 4-H Office by February 15.
***** International Youth Exchange Program Application Form and/or Host Family Application Form to be completed and submitted to State 4-H Office at a variety of dates.
