Chemical kill of the cover crop.
Chemical kill of the organic mulch (cover crop) was done using a single application of Weedone (2,4-D) @ 2 pt/A + Round-up (Glysophate) @ 4 pt/A with a tractor mounted boom sprayer. The cover crop was allowed to dry (die) out for about 2 weeks prior to transplanting. During this period the wind did a nice job of laying the desiccated cover crop down on the surface of the tomato bed. The cover crop could also be lightly rolled to help lay it down. The picture to the right shows what the cover crop looks like about a week after herbicide application before the wind has its effect.
