April 29, 1998. The mild spring has allowed many growers to put in early plantings of various vegetable crops. With frequent rrains and continued mild temperatures, the early crops look very good. Take this mini-tour to see what's going on in southeast OH.

Early sweet corn grown under clear plastic. The corn here was planted in early April and is now about 6 inches tall. If good weather continues, we may have OH sweet corn by the end of June.

Close up view of early sweet corn development. With this planting method, corn is planted in holes rather than in a deep furrow with a continuous sheet of plastic over the top which has to be cut when the corn presses against the plastic. The clear plastic here still has an excellent warming effect. |
